Posted May 26th, 2010 by Patrick van der VorstWe just valued a Damien Hirst Drawing for £2.000-3.000 which he made at the back of a London cab and gave to the taxi driver in early morning hours about a year ago… Cabbie just emailed back to say he was amazed it was worth that much!… Drawing is pretty good actually and depicts a shark…
I have always been amazed that these light sketches can make such a lot of money. Remember the Pharmacy sale which Sotheby’s organised in 2004 where simple ashtrays just signed by Damien sold for hundreds of pounds and scribbled sketches on napkins sold for thousands. It is true to say that in a way these quick drawings do reflect the artist’s mind and creativity wonderfully well, but are they true works of art that are worth such alot of money? What do you think?
